He studied at Cambridgewhere he edited an undergraduate magazine and wrote aFootlights May Week production. Called to the bar in1923, he served with the British Army during the SecondWorld War. While in the Middle East with his battalion heused to entertain the troops with a serial story eachevening. This formed the basis of his first book,Full Circle.He was appointed a County Court Judge in 1949 and heldthat position until 1967. The law and the circumstanceswhich surround it were the source of his many novels,plays, and short stories. His books are works of greatcomic genius with unpredictable twists of plot whichhighlight the often absurd workings of the English legalsystem.
